| | General Information | | Greece is a country dominated by the sea, it has in fact more coastline than any other country of it's size in the world. Comprising of about 2000 islands tourism has now become Greece's main industry with the population almost doubling during the summer months due to the ingress of the various holidaymakers from around the world. With it's beautiful beaches, sun and varied landscapes of olive trees, Cyprus groves, vineyards, rugged mountain ranges, and archaeological treasures, Greece is a veritable treasure trove for an unforgettable holiday.. Despite it's popularity it is still possible to enjoy an unspoiled traditional side of the country. Tourist season runs from May to October, but the heat in the cities, especially Athens can be stifling at the height of summer, but the islands are cooled by a fresh wind. | | Local Food | | As with all the most popular European destinations, you will find a massive amount of British type bars, pubs and tavernas, serving regular helpings of the sort of food you could find in any seaside resort back home. All meals come with chips, if that’s how you like it, but if you look around, there's Chinese, Italian and French restaurants to try too. If it's the more traditional style your looking for, grilled or fried Chicken, Lamb, Squid and Octopus can be enjoyed with fantastic salads sprinkled in Olive oil. Mezedes( a combination of local dishes), Souvlaki( kebabs), Stifado( local stew) and Fish are dishes found throughout the country and are well worth trying. Greek salads are also fantastic, with their famous oilves and local goats cheese. Most resorts provide a great choice of beers, wines and spirits but expect to pay more for the imported ones. Greeces favourite alcoholic drink is 'Ouzo', it is made from pressed grape skins, herbs and berries. It is ideally drunk striaght and sipped slowly. |
